PTE Academic scoring explained: the 10 to 90 scale

How PTE Academic scores each question type, why some items count toward two skills, and how PTE scores compare with IELTS bands.

Updated 29 October 2026

PTE Academic reports an overall score and a score for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing, each from 10 to 90. Results usually arrive within two days.

Two ways an item is scored

  • Correct or incorrect: one point or none, as in Answer Short Question.
  • Partial credit: points for each part you get right, as in Reading Fill in the Blanks or Write from Dictation.

Speaking and writing traits

Spoken and written items are scored on traits such as content, pronunciation, oral fluency, form, grammar and vocabulary. Content is scored first, and a zero on content means the whole item scores zero.

ItemTraits
Read AloudContent, pronunciation, oral fluency
Repeat SentenceContent, pronunciation, oral fluency
Summarize Written TextContent, form, grammar, vocabulary
Write EssayContent, form, structure, grammar, range, vocabulary, spelling

Items that count twice

Some items contribute to two skills. Repeat Sentence counts toward Listening and Speaking, and Summarize Written Text toward Reading and Writing, which is why they carry so much weight.
