Since September 2023 the GRE General Test takes about 1 hour 58 minutes, with five sections and no scheduled break. Analytical Writing always comes first.
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical Writing: Analyze an Issue | 1 essay | 30 minutes |
| Verbal Reasoning 1 | 12 | 18 minutes |
| Verbal Reasoning 2 | 15 | 23 minutes |
| Quantitative Reasoning 1 | 12 | 21 minutes |
| Quantitative Reasoning 2 | 15 | 26 minutes |
How the second sections adapt
The first Verbal and the first Quant section are of average difficulty. The difficulty of the second section of each measure depends on how well you did on the first.
Scoring
- Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170 in one point steps.
- Analytical Writing is scored from 0 to 6 in half points.
- There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
Tools on test day
Inside a section you can move freely, mark questions and return to them. Quant has an on-screen calculator with the four functions, square root, parentheses, memory and Transfer Display.
